Field Diary, 7th of July 2017
This place is tight, packed and bright. Its natural light switches from white to yellow. It either blinds my eyes or the camera. The area is crowded. Difficult to take photos here. Rudely I get pushed aside. An angry man grumbles his way fiercely through the crowds. Give him a stick and he could be Moses. A woman next to me breaks out in tears. She is begging: "Shabbat …, Shabbat …". I am not able to understand the second word she is saying. People answer her begging by throwing smaller coins in the little plastic cup she is holding.
The following photo reportage was shot on Machane Yehudah Market on a Friday around noon. It shows an eclectic collection of people as well as practices that make the materials of this old Jerusalem place. The market of Machane Yehudah is located in the western part Jerusalem. It is an area of about 400 to 400 metres in which shops are stringed on both sides of up to three main alleys.
