After the Iranian Revolution in the late 1970s, which was joined by secular communists, nationalists as well as religious radicals, Ayatollah Khomeini became the new face of the state saying: ‘It [Islam] is the religion of those who desire freedom and independence. Only ten years later Iran and American backed Iraq found themselves in an eight-year-long war which cost more than a million lives. The pictures show a War Memorial close to the north-western city Qazvin that honours the lost lives.
